Children of Asha Foundation
Hetauda, Nepal
This photo series was taken at the Asha Foundation, also known as Familia de Hetauda, it is a non-profit organization in Nepal that supports children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Through these portraits, I aim to capture not only the individual personalities of the children, but also the strength, care, and joy that define their daily lives. Each image reflects a moment of connection, dignity, and humanity, a glimpse into their world beyond the stigma they often face.
This work is part of a larger documentary and visual storytelling project that seeks to raise awareness, challenge perceptions, and celebrate the resilience of these young lives.
The School Route: A Bridge to Education
Every morning, the school bus from Familia de Hetauda travels through different areas of the city to pick up the children who attend the center. For many families, this service is essential, as it ensures their children have access to education in a safe and supportive environment. During the journey, students are accompanied by staff members, ensuring a calm and cared-for trip. More than just transportation, the school route is the first step each day toward inclusion and learning.

Therapies for Holistic Development
At Asha School, therapy plays a vital role in the daily lives of the children. Tailored to each student’s individual needs, these sessions aim to improve their well-being, autonomy, and overall quality of life.
Speech therapy helps children develop communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal. It focuses on areas such as pronunciation, understanding and using language, gestures, and visual supports.
Sensory therapy is essential for children with sensory processing difficulties. Through activities that stimulate the senses — such as textures, sounds, and movement — it encourages self-regulation, attention, and emotional development.
Physiotherapy supports students with motor difficulties, helping to improve strength, balance, coordination, and mobility. These sessions allow children to gain more independence in everyday tasks like walking, sitting, or playing.
Thanks to this holistic therapeutic approach, students at Asha School receive comprehensive care that nurtures their abilities and supports their development on all levels.

First picture from left: in the calm of the sensory room, this boy finds a moment of peace. Living with autism, blindness, and Down syndrome, his world can often be overwhelming, but here he is relaxed, eyes gently closed, embraced by a space designed to soothe and support. The sensory room offers him a refuge where touch, sound, and light are carefully balanced to help him connect with his surroundings and feel safe.
This quiet moment reflects not only his unique challenges but also the strength and dignity that shine through every day.

Occupational Workshop at Asha  School: A Space to Grow and Express Themselves
At the occupational workshop of Familia de Hetauda (Asha Foundation), students with intellectual disabilities take part in daily activities designed to develop their skills, promote independence, and nurture their creativity. This space is much more than a routine — it's a safe and stimulating environment where each person can express themselves, learn, and feel part of a community.
Throughout the day, students engage in tasks such as making bracelets, necklaces, and other handmade crafts, which are later sold to help support the center. They also take part in recycling, sewing, gardening, and painting activities, all adapted to their abilities and interests. The educational team provides close guidance and encouragement, respecting each individual's pace.
Beyond developing practical and social skills, the workshop boosts the students’ self-esteem and sense of dignity by giving them an active role in their environment. Every achievement, no matter how small , is celebrated, as it represents a meaningful step toward a fuller, more integrated life.
Daily Life at Asha School
At Asha School, every day is filled with learning, play, and discovery. The center provides adapted education for children with intellectual disabilities in a safe, inclusive, and caring environment.
Activities are tailored to each student’s abilities and range from basic reading, writing, and math to artistic expression, music, motor skills development, and daily life routines. Social skills and personal autonomy are also key focuses, helping each child grow with confidence.
With an individualized and compassionate approach, the teaching team not only educates but supports each child in their journey of development. Asha School is more than a school,  it’s a place where everyone has a space, a voice, and an opportunity.
